THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg fell 6-5 to Frederick at Harry Grove Stadium yesterday as the Keys completed a four-game sweep...Tonight the Hillcats play the series opener of a three-game series at Salem and the fifth contest of seven in a row on the road...
VS. SALEM: The Hillcats are 5-5 against the Red Sox thus far this season and are 1-3 at Memorial Ballpark...The Cats went 10-10 against the Sox in the 460 series last season and were 5-5 at Lewis Gale Field...In the post-season the Cats swept the Sox three games to none in the Mills Cup Championship...In the all-time series Salem leads 160-142 during the regular season...
HAVEN'T WE DONE THIS BEFORE? Lynchburg is in the midst of 13 games in a row that are all against Salem and Frederick...They just played six at home against the two teams (three against each squad) and now are on the road to play seven games (four in Frederick and three at Salem) at the Keys and Sox home parks...The Hillcats began the season with 14 games against only Salem and Frederick as well and they will have a similar stretch at the end of July...
TURN FOR THE WORSE: Halfway through game one of this series, the Hillcats led 4-1 and looked to be heading to a sixth straight win and had a chance to pull within five games of first place in the Northern Division...The Keys then scored six unanswered runs to take the series opener 7-4 and since Lynchburg led 4-1 in the middle of game one, Frederick outscored them 23-7...The Cats entered the series with their first five-game winning streak of the season, before getting swept in the four-game set...Yesterday the Hillcats were four outs away from a series finale victory in Frederick before the Keys plated a pair in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for the win and the series sweep...It marked the first time this season Lynchburg has been swept in a four-game series and the third time they have been swept in a set...
USE BOTH HANDS: The Hillcats had three separate leads yesterday in Frederick...They were up 2-0 after a half an inning, up 3-2 after an inning and a half and led 5-3 heading into the sixth inning before relinquishing the advantage again...It was Lynchburg's 17th blown lead this season in 57 games...
BRAY'S BIG DAY: LHP Bill Bray celebrated his 27th birthday by making his 2010 debut Saturday night...The former first round pick went one scoreless inning in his first appearance as a Hillcat...It was his first time pitching in a real game since April 15th of last year with Triple-A Louisville...He was activated Thursday and was transferred to the Lynchburg roster Friday from the Bats...The southpaw has been on the Disabled List since last season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow that led to Tommy John surgery...Last season he only made three appearances after he had spent time at the Major League level the three previous seasons...In 2008 he went 2-2 with a 2.87 ERA in 63 games out of the bullpen for the Reds...Bray was acquired by Cincinnati in a trade in 2006 along with SS Royce Clayton, INF Brendan Harris, RHP Gary Majewski and RHP Daryl Thompson, in exchange for OF Austin Kearns, SS Felipe Lopez and RHP Ryan Wagner...He pitched in the Carolina League in 2005 with Potomac and had a 1-0 mark with a 2.13 ERA and three saves in eight relief appearances with the Cannons...He is the only Hillcat with any previous experience in the CL...
CHANGE OF SCENERY: OF Efrain Contreras, UTIL Kevyn Feiner and C Kevin Coddington have all dramatically increased their batting averages after moving up to the Advanced-A level this season...Contreras, who was batting .203 in Dayton, is hitting .260...Feiner, who was batting .145 in Dayton, is hitting .315 with the Hillcats...Coddington had a .239 average with the Dragons and he is hitting .360 so far while donning the Green & Gold...Contreras has also connected on two long balls in 16 games with the Cats after he did not homer in 24 contests with the Dragons...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Brock Huntzinger was selected by the Red Sox in the third round of the 2007 draft out of high school in Indiana...That same year he worked four games (three starts) for the GCL Red Sox and went 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA...The next year he pitched for both Short Season Low-A Lowell and full season Low-A Greenville...With Lowell he went 5-0 with a 0.64 ERA and with Greenville he had a 2-3 mark with a 7.09 ERA...Last season he returned to Greenville where he had a 10-9 record with a 4.09 ERA in 25 starts with the Drive...This season he has made 11 starts for Salem and has gone 5-3 with a 2.83 ERA...Huntzinger has made three starts against Lynchburg this season, going a combined 0-2 with a 7.24 ERA (11 earned runs in 13 and 2/3 innings)...
