Potomac Nationals News Release
14-time All Star Ivan Rodriguez will make a rehab appearance with the Potomac Nationals Monday night in Woodbridge. Rodriguez, who has been on the disabled list since May 23 with a lower back strain, plans to catch five or six innings at Pfitzner Stadium. If all goes well, "Pudge" plans to be behind the plate to catch the highly anticipated debut of Stephen Strasburg Tuesday night at Nationals Park.
Rodriguez, winner of 13 Gold Gloves and seven Silver Slugger Awards, took batting practice on the field with the big league club Sunday in Washington and felt good enough to schedule the rehab in Potomac.
The Nationals signed Rodriguez in the offseason, and the future Hall of Famer was a catalyst in the ballclub's hot start. The backstop hit .325 in 35 games with 16 RBI; Rodriguez smashed a home run and nine doubles while managing the evolving pitching staff.
The 1999 American League MVP, Pudge holds the Major League record for games caught. He set the mark in June of 2009 when he passed Carlton Fisk with his 2,227th game behind the plate.
Rodriguez won the World Series in 2003 with the Florida Marlins, and was in the Fall Classic with the Tigers in 2006.
