Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - Turnabout is fair play for Tim Melville and the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Five days after Melville took a loss to the Kinston Indians despite allowing just a single run over five frames, Melville got his revenge off the K-Tribe and opposing starting pitcher T.J. House. Melville tossed six scoreless innings, and the Rocks plated three runs off House in a 5-0 win.
Melville (2-6) was magnificent. He did a little of everything, as the right-hander pitched out of trouble, set the side down in order multiple times, pitched to contact effectively, and still struck out seven.
He allowed a runner to sneak into scoring position in each of the first three frames, but three times he worked his way around the trouble. Then Melville hit a stretch where he sat down seven straight hitters. From the midway point of the third inning forward, Melville retired 11 of the final 12 batters he faced.
Buddy Baumann entered the game in the seventh, and picked up right where the Wilmington starter left off. He recorded outs against all nine batters he faced to grab his fourth save of the season. The Blue Rocks pitching staff sat down 20 of the last 21 K-Tribers who came to the plate.
Offensively, Wilmington took advantage of Kinston mistakes early, plating single tallies in each of the first three frames. Eric Hosmer got things started in style with a first-inning RBI single that scored Patrick Norris.
In the second, Wilmington used two Kinston errors to get a run. Rey Navarro jump-started the rally when he lined a one-out single up the middle. It looked as though he would be retired on Juan Rivera's subsequent grounder to the pitcher, but when House twirled and threw to second, his toss sailed into left-center. One out later he scored on another Kinston miscue, this time an errant throw by second baseman Jason Kipnis.
The Blue Crew went in front by three runs in the third. Hosmer reached and went to second on a botched attempt to field his bouncer by first baseman Doug Pickens. He scored one batter later on Jamie Romak's RBI single up the middle.
The Rocks padded their lead with two more scores late. Nick Francis roped a run-scoring double in the sixth, while Romak came home on Navarro's RBI single an inning later.
Wilmington continues this three-game series with the K-Tribe on Tuesday night at Frawley Stadium. The Rocks will send southpaw Chris Dwyer (3-3, 3.61) to the hill, while Kinston counters with right-hander Marty Popham (0-1, 5.52). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m.
PEBBLES OF KNOWLEDGE:
Jamie Romak extended his hitting streak to 15 games with his RBI single in the third inning. The utility man, who played third base on Monday night, finished the evening, 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He is batting a blistering .456 (26-for-57) over these last 15 games. He has raised his average 71 points (.196-.267) in the process. It is the longest hitting streak by a Blue Rock since Kurt Mertins compiled a 17-gamer from June 18-July 9, 2008.
Rey Navarro failed to record a multi-hit game in each of his 31 contests as a Blue Rock. He has now done so twice in the last two games. The shortstop had two more hits on Monday night. Over the last 48 hours, Navarro has raised his average 29 points (.187-.216).
It was the second shutout the Rocks have posted in 2010. The other one also happened to come in a Tim Melville start against the Kinston Indians.
In three starts against the Wilmington Blue Rocks this season, Kinston pitcher T.J. House has allowed just one earned run in 15 innings pitched. That is good for an ERA of 0.60.
Wilmington has won 10 of its last 13 games at Frawley Stadium. The Rocks record at home has now moved back above .500 to 15-14 on the year.
Kinston has committed at least three errors in a game only three times all season. Two of those occurrences have come at Frawley Stadium.
