State College Spikes News Release

AUBURN, N.Y. - Stanley Espinal's solo homer helped propel the State College Spikes to a 3-0 lead on Monday night, but the Auburn Doubledays surged late to take a 4-3 win from the Spikes at Falcon Park.

Espinal's home run, his third of the year, came on a 1-2 pitch from Auburn (19-30) starter Tyler Dyson to lead off the fourth inning. The long ball also gave Espinal his team-leading 26th run batted in of the season.

The Spikes (25-25) took the opening lead of the game on David Vinsky's sacrifice fly to right field. After Espinal's blast, Terry Fuller extended the lead to 3-0 with an RBI single in the fifth.

State College carried that lead into the seventh, when Alberto Carrillo doubled in J.T. Arruda after the latter's walk to put Auburn on the board. Carrillo then advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a subsequent passed ball to cut the margin to one run.

In the eighth, Andrew Pratt's one-out single was followed by a bunt hit for Jake Randa, putting runners on first and second. Eric Lex then took over on the mound for Jacob Schlesener (2-4) and struck out Jeremy Ydens, though a passed ball on the third strike advanced the runners to second and third.

Arruda then singled in both runs with a line drive up the middle to finalize the scoring.

Schlesener took the loss after yielding four runs, two of them earned, on five hits and two walks while striking out one batter over 2 1/3 innings.

State College starter Junior Gonzalez produced a strong outing, tossing five shutout innings and allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out one batter.

Doubledays reliever Jordan Bocko (1-1) finished the game with two scoreless frames for the win. Bocko yielded one hit and one walk while recording two strikeouts.

The Spikes' Martin Figueroa beat out an infield single in the second to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Moises Castillo went 2-for-5 with a double for State College.

State College continues its road trip with the middle game of a three-game series against the Doubledays on Tuesday. The 7:00 p.m. matchup at Falcon Park will feature right-hander Enmanuel Solano (1-6) on the mound for the Spikes. The Doubledays will go with right-hander Niomar Gomez (1-3).
