Sioux City, IA - The Canaries (3-3) were victims of three defensive errors on Wednesday night at Lewis & Clark Park, as the Explorers (3-3) defeated the Canaries 7-1.

The Explorers opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ryan Gripp reached on a throwing error by Canaries shortstop Sammy Juarez. Jorge Moreno and Kevin Henry followed with back-to-back doubles to give Sioux City a 2-0 lead.

Sioux City struck again in the fifth inning. After Ryan Ruiz and Julius Thames got on base, Dan Meier hit a ground ball toward Ralph Santana at second base. Santana errantly threw the ball into left field allowing both Ruiz and Thames to score, making it 4-0.

The Explorers poured it on in the seventh. After a leadoff double by Ruiz, Dan Meier hit his first home run of the season to put the Explorers up 6-0. Gripp and Moreno followed with back-to-back doubles for a 7-0 lead.

The Canaries got on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, Santana singled and Chad Hermansen walked. That put two runners on for Edgard Clemente, who lined a single into left field and score Santana making it 7-1.

Evan Gruesel (0-1) suffered the loss for the Canaries. Tom Lipari (1-0) allowed just one run on five hits in 7.1 innings of work.

The I-29 rivals will wrap-up the four-game series on Thursday night in Sioux City. The Canaries return to the Birdcage on Tuesday, May 23 for a three-game series with the St. Paul Saints.
