SERIES FOUR OF SEVEN vs. AKRON
OVERVIEW - The SeaWolves return home for a brief, three-game homestand with the Akron Aeros. Erie is coming off of two straight days without a game due to rainouts in Bowie. The SeaWolves have dropped two in a row (one to Reading and one to Bowie) after a three-game win streak last week.
Nate Bumstead is going for his second consecutive win in game one of the series. He is 4-2 in his last six starts after going over a month without a win. Bumstead is 0-1 against Akron. Akron's game one starter Sean Smith is coming off his first loss of the 2006 season against the Binghamton Mets. He started the season 8-0.
Game two of the series features Virgil Vasquez (4-6, 4.15 ERA) against Dan Denham (3-0, 2.77 ERA). Vasquez is coming off his first win in four starts. He is 1-4 with a 4.07 ERA at Jerry Uht Park. Vasquez is 0-1 in two starts against the Aeros. Denham has split time this season between Triple-A Buffalo and Akron. He is coming off a win in his last start against Binghamton.
Game three will feature a pair of Double-A rookies in Jair Jurrjens (1-0, 1.50 ERA) against Aaron Laffey (3-0, 1.83 ERA). The start for Jurrjens will be his third since joining the 'Wolves from Class-A Lakeland. He picked up a win his last time out against Reading going seven strong innings allowing no runs off of just four hits. He walked two and struck out four in the game. Laffey has one outing against Erie this season (June 20). In that game, he went five innings allowing one run off of four hits and got a no-decision.
The Aeros are still the hottest team in the Southern Division despite dropping two straight. They are 6-4 in their last 10 games.
The Aeros took two of three when these teams last met June 2-4 at Jerry Uht Park.
Both teams in the season series have been unable to protect their home field advantage with the SeaWolves taking a two-game sweep at Canal Park and the Aeros taking five of six at Jerry Uht Park.
