Connecticut Defenders News Release
Brian Horwitz came up big twice for the Defenders as Connecticut snapped a seven game losing streak with a 4-3 walk off win against the Harrisburg Senators.
The Defenders got five solid two-run innings from James Garcia in his second start with the Defenders. One of those runs came on Prentice Redman's 3rd home run of the season. In the 5th inning the offense backed him up, starting with a Brian Munhall lead off single. With Tyler Von Schell pinch-hitting, Munhall stole his first base of the season, and then advanced to third base on a passed ball. Von Schell walked, and both runners then advanced with Munhall scoring on a wild pitch by Justin Echols to make the score 2-1. Von Schell would come around to tie the game on a Brian Buscher two out RBI single.
The score would remain tied 2-2 until the 7th, which also began with Brian Munhall reaching base, this time on a walk. Again Munhall stole second, but the throw down to second base by Salomon Manriquez caromed off Munhall into left field, and Munhall took third base. He then came in with the go ahead run on a Brian Horwitz RBI single.
Billy Sadler struggled again in the 9th inning, allowing Harrisburg to tie the game 3-3, but Connecticut came right back in the bottom half of the inning when Derin McMains led off with a triple on a ball misplayed by pinch runner and defensive specialist Tim Raines Jr. Three batters later with the bases loaded and one out, Horwitz delivered again with a walk off game winning single. Horwitz it up the middle and the Defenders snapped their seven game slump with a 4-3 win.
On Wednesday the Defenders will return to the diamond, as they will face big leaguer Pedro Astacio, making a rehab start, his first appearance with the Senators. The Defenders will counter Astacio with Chris Begg (5-8). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
