Erie SeaWolves Earn Series Win against RubberDucks, 9-4, After Four-Run First Inning Sparks Offense

June 27, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

The Erie SeaWolves use two four-run innings and strong pitching to take Sunday's series finale against the Akron RubberDucks, winning the seventh game of the series by a score of 9-4 at Canal Park.

Turning Point

Erie came out of the gates swinging as Dillon Dingler singled home Ryan Kreidler to give the SeaWolves the 1-0 lead in the first inning. Two batters later, Kerry Carpenter would double the SeaWolves lead to 2-0 with an RBI single into right field. In the very next at-bat, Brady Policelli continued the first inning hitting spree with two-run double into left field to make it 4-0 Erie.

Mound Presence

Juan Hillman took the mound for Akron but was roughed up early as Erie converted four singles and a double into four first inning runs. Hillman would settle in and toss three scoreless innings to give the RubberDucks some length on the mound, but his final line was four innings pitched, allowing six hits, issuing two walks, and four earned runs. Jake Miednik had quite an unusual outing for the Ducks as he began the fifth with a strike out in the dirt that allowed the runner to reach first base, followed by a costly fielding error that opened the door for a four run fifth from the SeaWolves. Miednik would work through 0.2 innings in relief, striking out two while allowing four unearned runs. Manuel Alvarez would be next out of pen for Akron and toss 2.1 scoreless innings of relief including two strikeouts. Dakody Clemmer would toss a scoreless inning. Nick Mikolajchak dodged major trouble when he worked the ninth inning, allowing only one run on three hits as he faced the heart of the Erie order.

Duck Tales

Akron would get a run back in the third inning when Marcos Gonzalez launched a solo home run into the right-centerfield bullpen to make it 4-1 Erie. Chris Roller singled in the sixth to score Alex Call to make the Erie lead 8-2. In the seventh, Jose Fermin would ground out to short to bring home M. Gonzalez to trim the lead down to 8-3. Later in the seventh, Oscar Gonzalez singled home Will Benson to cut Erie's lead to 8-4. Akron would threaten to tie the game in the eight by loading the bases and bringing the tying run to the plate, but a ground out would leave them stranded. The RubberDucks left 10 on base and were 2-for-10 with RISP.
