
En Vogal - Rayz netminder leads CC past Lubbock 3-1

On Friday Night, the Corpus Christi Rayz accomplished a feat that had only been reached once in the team's nine-year history. Ron Vogel turned in his sharpest performance of the season making 47 saves on 48 shots as the Rayz topped the Lubbock Cotton Kings 3-1 for their sixth consecutive win matching a franchise high. The Rayz improved to 21-14-5 on the year and increased to 47 points - eight within the idle Laredo Bucks. The Rayz will now have a chance to set franchise marks for winning streaks - both overall and home - with on Saturday night in the first of a two game set versus the rival Laredo Bucks. The teams combined for 39 shots in the opening period of play, however neither goaltender was solved. Ron Vogel made a Rayz season-high number of saves for a period, turning aside 23. At the other end Kyle Stanton was terrific as well making all 16 saves he was forced to make. The Cotton Kings outshot the Rayz 23-16 in the opening period.
Both teams got on the board in the second period. Lubbock took the lead at 7:14 when Ander Strome blasted a one-timer from the top of the slot to make the score 1-0. Corpus Christi tied the scored a few minutes later on the power play. Kevin Watters broke behind the defense and took a tape to tape pass from Jason Baird. Watters then moved in on Stanton and beat him through the legs to tie the score 1-1. The Rayz outshot Lubbock 13-12 in the second period and the clubs went to the third tied.
The Rayz took their first lead of the game in the third period when Jason Baird scored from the left side of the crease at 5:24. The Rayz then rode another outstanding period from Vogel as he closed the door on the Cotton Kings. Justin Quenneville put the game on ice with his empty net, team-leading 19th goal of the season at 19:49.
The win for the Rayz was their eighth in the last ten games. Vogel was brilliant ,improving to 13-8-3. The Cotton Kings fell to 1-5-1 in their last seven and dropped to 14-18-3. Kyle Stanton played well but suffered his ninth straight regulation loss making 35 saves on 37 shots. His record fell to 6-10-1. The Cotton Kings outshot the Rayz 48-38. The Rayz went 1-3 on the power play and the Kings went 0-5. Corpus Christi can now set franchise records for most consecutive wins and most consecutive home wins Saturday Night when the welcome the Laredo Bucks for the first of two straight games.
Saturday Night at 8:05pm is ICU II Night and the Rayz will wear special Delta Airlines jerseys that will be auctioned off at the game.
