Colorado Eagles News Release
TULSA, Okla.- The Colorado Eagles beat the Tulsa Oilers 5-1 Friday night at the Tulsa Convention Center in front of 4,187 fans. Ed McGrane had two goals including his fifth shorthanded goal of the season and Marco Emond beat his former team only giving up one goal in the final minute of the game. Seth Leonard added a goal and two assists and Brad Williamson tallied two assists as the Eagles bounced back from just their second home loss of the season on Wednesday. The Eagles became the first team in the Central Hockey League to win 30 games as they improved their record to 30-6-0 for 60 points. Tulsa's record fell to 13-17-5 as they played their first game with some new faces in the lineup. The Eagles will head to Wichita to take on the Thunder Saturday night in the second game of three in three days.
Seth Leonard opened the scoring just 3:48 into the first period when he took a feed from Sean Robertson and scored as the Eagles had an extra attacker. Just moments later, Ed McGrane took the puck away from Oilers' goaltender Jason Montgomery from behind the net and scored a wrap around goal as the Eagles were shorthanded. The goal marked the Eagles league-leading 24th shorthanded goal of the season as they entered the first intermission riding a 2-0 lead.
Colorado added to their two-goal lead late in the third period on Brent Hughes first goal as a Colorado Eagle. Hughes jammed in a rebound off a Brad Williamson shot to get off the goose egg with Colorado. That goal came at the 16:44 mark of the second period and proved to be the only marker of the period. After two periods of play, the Eagles had a 3-0 lead although they were being out shot 16-12 after two periods.
Eagles center Ed McGrane scored his second goal of the game at the 3:54 mark of the third period to all but end the hopes of the Oilers. Seth Leonard assisted on the play for his second one of the game. At the 15:35 mark Riley Nelson scored the Eagles final goal of the game making the score 5-0. One minute later, tempers flared and many players went to the penalty box for each team as the Oilers did not take exception to the Eagles. Marco Emond needed just 36 more seconds to complete a shutout of his former team, but the puck bounced off the skate of an Eagles player and into the back of the net. Emond settled with 22 saves on 23 shots in his 21st win of the season. Final Score: Eagles 5 - Oilers 1.
