Sundogs Drop Southwest Division Battle 4-3

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs hosted the Amarillo Gorillas Friday evening at the Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley in a battle of fellow second place clubs. Arizona would skate to an early two-goal lead but Amarillo would fight back and eventually win 4-3. With the loss Arizona falls to 18-18-1 on the season and to third in the Southwest Division just two points back of first place Amarillo.

The Arizona Sundogs would waste no time getting on the board in the first as Cory Stillman would break free on a pass from Chris Bartolone skating in alone on Gorillas' netminder Jamie Vandespyker, scoring just 15 seconds into the contest to give Arizona an early 1-0 lead. At the 9:33 mark Arizona would see its second power play of the night as Keith Detlefsen would be tagged with two-minutes for hooking. The power play would give Stillman his second goal of the night as he would put away passes from Dmitri Leonov and Bartolone just 17 seconds into the man advantage. Amarillo would fight back to tie the game at 2-2 on goals from Bill Vandermeer and Chris Lipsett. John Glavota and Austin Sutter would assist on Vandermeer's goal at 12:41 of the first. The equalizer would come with just five seconds remaining in the opening period. Rich Hansen and Galloway Carroll would help on the play.

The second period wouldn't see its first goal until the Sundogs were handed a 5-3 man advantage halfway through the frame. Amarillo would kill off the first penalty but while on a 5-4 power play Stillman would find Jordan Mowbray skating wide. Mowbray would drop the puck to a waiting Karl Sellan who would fire the puck past Vandespyker to score the Sundogs' second power play goal of the game to give his club a 3-2 lead. Less than a minute later the Gorillas would pull even again on their first power play goal of the night. Lipsett would grab his second goal of the game on a pass from Detlefsen and Rich Hansen in front of the net. Amarillo would grab their first lead of the game on their second power play goal of the night as Arizona would be penalized for too many men on the ice. Hansen would score on a pass from Vandermeer at 14:59 of the period to go up 4-3.

Both teams would see their chances in the third period but it would be the Sundogs that would come up short in the 4-3 loss. Kevin Couture would get his first start in a Sundogs uniform, stopping 15 of 19 shots faced. Vandespyker would backstop Amarillo to the win, deflecting 33 of 36 shots. Amarillo faired better with the man advantage finishing 2-for-8 on the power play while Arizona finished 2-for-10 on the night. Despite the loss, Arizona outshot Amarillo 36-19.

The Sundogs now head to Colorado for back-to-back games against the Rocky Mountain Rage on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
