Eugene Emeralds News Release
EUGENE, Ore. - Outfielder Donnie Dewees hit a go-ahead home run in the fourth inning and the Emeralds pulled away to defeat Boise, 9-5, on Monday night at PK Park.
Eugene (1-0, 18-21) snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory to start the second half of the season. The winner of each division in the first half (Hillsboro and Tri-City) meets the second half champions in the playoffs.
Dewees went 2-for-4 on the night with two runs, three RBIs and his two-run homer. Matt Rose and Ian Rice also had two hits while Eloy Jimenez doubled and scored twice. Eugene starter Oscar De La Cruz (3-2) picked up the win after allowing five runs on six hits in five innings with four strikeouts. Pedro Araujo tossed three scoreless innings of relief with just two hits allowed.
Both teams scored a pair in the second inning. Boise scored on a RBI double by Kevin Padlo and a balk. Eugene responded with RBI doubles from Jimenez and Ian Rice. Jimenez drove in Dewees, who singled, stole second and swiped third to start the inning. Boise broke the tie with a three-run third. Brian Mundell lifted a sac fly to center to start the scoring before Hamlet Marte hit a two-run double. Eugene got two runs back in the bottom of the third on a two-run error.
Eugene took a 6-5 lead on Dewees' two-run blast in the fourth, his third in the last five games. The Ems added to the advantage with Blake Headley's RBI double an inning later. Rose drove in his team-leading 27th run of the game with a RBI single in the sixth to make it an 8-5 game. A RBI groundout by Dewees added the ninth run of the game for Eugene.
