El Paso Diablos News Release
El Paso, TX - Shaun Ellis was stellar in tossing a complete game but his offense never showed up as the Diablos were shutout 1-0 by the Wichita Wingnuts at Cohen Stadium on Sunday night. It is the fifth shutout this season for El Paso which scored just seven runs in the entire series. It also marks the first 1-0 game at Cohen Stadium since June 1, 2009 when the Diablos beat Wichita.
Shaun Ellis (8-4) was spectacular but will take the tough loss. He tossed his second complete game of the season and allowed just one run on six hits, two walks and two strike outs. He stifled the Wichita offense for much of the night. He limited the Wingnuts to just eight base runners and they had multiple runners on base just twice. Wichita got a runner past first base just three times in the game. He gives El Paso their third complete game of the season.
El Paso's chances were much better throughout the game but it was Wichita who took advantage of one of the few chances they had. In the fourth inning Jorge Cortes led off with a single later came in from third on a Raul Gonzalez base hit to produce the only run of the game. El Paso had opportunities throughout the night but never could come up with the one big hit they needed. They got a man into scoring position on six different occasions while the Wingnuts did that just three times.
Kevin Angelle (2-1) was fantastic in shutting down the Diablos. He pitched seven great innings and kept the Diablos hitters off balance throughout his outing. He allowed just five hits, three walks and struck out four. El Paso did get a runner to second on six different occasions but were just 1-10 with runners in scoring position with that one being an infield single. The Diablos had multiple runners on base only twice in the game. Kyle Nichols and Bryon Smith both went 2-3 with a walk.
El Paso will have the day off on Monday and then welcome in the Shreveport-Bossier Captains on Tuesday. El Paso will be sending William Buzhardt (2-4, 7.61) to the mound. First Pitch is slated for 7:05. It is a Bud Light Lime a la Mexicana and fans can get a Bud Light Lime and a Mexican entré(c)e. Fans can listen in online at www.diablos.com.
