Wichita Wingnuts News Release

EL PASO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts shutout the El Paso Diablos 1-0 at Cohen Stadium on Sunday evening.

Kevin Angelle won for a second consecutive start, firing seven-plus shutout innings. Angelle struck out four, walked three, and scattered six hits.

The Wingnuts scored the only run of the night in the top of the fourth. Jorge Cortes led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch from Diablos' starter Shaun Ellis. Carlos Rivera moved Cortes to third with a groundout to second base. Raul Gonzalez grounded a single through the middle of a drawn in El Paso infield to give Wichita a 1-0 lead.

The run came half an inning after Rivera made a heads up play to keep El Paso off the board. With Jeff Vincent on second and two outs, Bryon Smith hit a slow groundball up the third base line that was gloved by Michael Bell. Smith beat out Bell's throw to first, but with Vincent digging for the plate, Rivera fired a strike to Jeff Christy who tagged Vincent out to end the inning.

After the Wingnuts took the lead, Angelle worked around a one-out double from J.D. Reininger in the bottom of the fourth. Angelle retired Jonathan Reynoso on a foul popup and then struck out Jeff Hulett. The Diablos had the tying run on second with only one out in the fifth and sixth innings as well, but Angelle worked out of both jams. Adam Deleo singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but was picked off by Angelle who ended the inning with a strikeout of Vincent.

Angelle issued a leadoff walk to Arnoldo Ponce in the bottom of the eighth and was lifted for Cephas Howard. Rico Santana swung through a hit-and-run attempt allowing Jeff Christy to throw Ponce out at second. Howard eventually struck out Santana and left mid-count against Bryon Smith. Dustin Cameron came in to relieve Howard, and walked Smith before allowing a single to Kyle Nichols. Cameron stranded the tying and go-ahead runners on base when he got Reininger to fly out to right.

Cameron hit Reynoso leading off the ninth, but struck out Jeff Hulett on a bunt attempt. When Deleo swung through another El Paso hit-and-run chance, Christy fired a strike to second to nail his second baserunner in as many innings. Cameron finished the four-out save opportunity when Deleo grounded out to Cameron who made a barehand snag before tossing to Rivera at first.

Ellis took the loss for the Diablos, allowing one earned run on six hits in a complete game. Cortes, Rivera, and Gonzalez accounted for all of the Wingnuts' hits. Jorge Delgado's hitting streak came to and end at 19 games.
