Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La. - Pensacola Pelicans righthander Dane De Valk won three straight decisions against the Shreveport-Bossier Captains last season, but the Captains beat him three straight times down the stretch last season. This year, it has been more success for Shreveport-Bossier against De Valk, winning all four times he has started against them this year, including Sunday's seven-run, first-inning demolition of De Valk and the Pelicans, as the Captains ended their 2010 Fair Grounds Field regular-season schedule with an 11-2 win in front of 956 fans.

Bryan Sabatella started the carnage with a double off the centerfield wall to start the game, and moved to third on Robert Perry's bloop single off the glove of the shortstop Carlos Leon. Christopher Garcia then singled with a base hit to right to open the scoring, before Palmer Karr walked to load the bases. De Valk (7-8) then hit Andres Rodriguez to load the bases, and Jorge Alvarez doubled down the leftfield line to bring in two more. With the infield in, Uriak Marquez singled to make it 5-0, and he stole second before a one-out sacrifice fly by Jovanny Rosario made it 6-0. A wild pitch then scored Marquez, and Sabatella walked to chase De Valk after just two thirds of an inning.

Garcia extended the Shreveport-Bossier lead to 10-0 with a three-run blast of reliever Lee Henry in the fourth, and the Captains (52-39, 23-19 2nd half) got to 11 with a Marquez RBI single in the sixth.

Just as he was when he won the last home game of the first half, rookie Cody Kelley (2-2) was the beneficiary of a huge offensive outburst in the final home game of the second half. The Delta State alum retired the first nine hitters he faced, and only had two runners on in the seventh, when he got Dallas Christison and Carlos Leon to complete his evening. The Pelicans (46-44, 26-14) only mustered four hits and two walks off Kelley, before getting two unearned runs off Dan Griffin in the eighth.

Hector Carrasco finished things off with a scoreless ninth inning, starting a 1-6-3 double play off the bat of Kyle Brown to get the Captains their 32nd home win of the season.

Notes: Henry saved the Pensacola bullpen with 4 1/3 innings, allowing only the three runs off Garcia's homer, his team-leading 14th of the season. The Captains ended the season series 12-8 against Pensacola, including winning the last five games in a row overall and the last six in a row at Fair Grounds Field, finishing 9-3 at home against the Pelicans..Perry finished 3-for-5 and was 7-for-12 in his first series as a Captain.

The Shreveport-Bossier Captains finish the 2010 regular season with a six-game road trip, starting Tuesday night against the El Paso Diablos, with first pitch scheduled for 8:05 p.m. Central time. The Captains will next be at home for Game 3 of the South Division Championship Series, at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, September 3. Postseason ticket information will be available on Monday.
