Wingnuts Suffer Tough Loss

EL PASO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 6-5 to the El Paso Diablos at Cohen Stadium on Saturday night.

Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Jeff Hulett singled to left off of Dustin Cameron to drive in Arnoldo Ponce with the winning run. Ponce singled to left against Cephas Howard leading off the inning, who retired the next two hitters before Cameron was summoned from the bullpen. The Wingnuts left 14 runners on base in the loss.

The Wingnuts mounted a ninth inning comeback to tie the game. Trailing 5-3, Carlos Rivera and Raul Gonzalez hit back-to-back singles with one out. After Joseph Spiers pinch-ran for Gonzalez, Jorge Delgado doubled off the fence in right field to score rivera and cut the lead to 5-4. El Paso intentionally walked Michael Bell to load the bases. Jesse Estraded then walked Jeff Christy to force in the tying run. Estrada escaped further trouble, retiring Josh Horn on a popped up bunt and Ryan Patterson on a groundout to second.

The Wingnuts scored first for a second straight game on a first inning sacrifice fly from Jorge Cortes, but El Paso plated four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-1 lead. Rico Santana tied the game with an RBI single, setting up a three-run home run to left from Bryon Smith.

After the teams traded runs in the sixth inning, a single by Delgado and two El Paso errors led to an unearned run for the Wingnuts in the top of the seventh. The single extended Delgado's hitting streak to 19 games, one shy of the Wingnuts' club record.

Sean Teague started for Wichita and took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs in 5.1 IP. Teague struck out one and walked one while allowing six hits. Dustin Birosak started for the Diablos and also took a no-decision. Birosak allowed two earned runs in 5.1 IP. Howard was charged with the loss, allowing one earned run in 1.2 IP. Estrada earned the win for El Paso. Raul Gonzalez had four hits for the Wingnuts.
