Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - The Shreveport-Bossier Captains set a new franchise best with their 31st home victory of the season, as a big crowd of 3,232 watched the Captains beat the Pensacola Pelicans 8-2 at Fair Grounds Field on Saturday night.
The Captains (51-37, 22-19 2nd half) improved to 31-15 at home, scoring two runs in the second, three in the third and two in the fifth against Pelicans righty Jared Gothreaux (8-8), knocking him out after 4 1/3 innings. It was the Lake Charles native's shortest start of the season, allowing 11 hits and seven runs.
His counterpart Richard Salazar (9-4) skirted danger in the first four innings, stranding eight Pelicans baserunners while allowing just one run - on a third-inning single by John Alonso.
Bryan Sabatella (1-for-4), Jorge Alvarez (3-for-3) and Brian Peterson (2-for-4) each drove in two runs, and eight of the nine Captains picked up at least one hit, led by Alvarez and Robert Perry's three a piece.
After Salazar went six innings, allowing eight hits and two walks along with three strikeouts, Justin Young allowed the second Pensacola run in the seventh inning on a single by Marcos Rodriguez. Jameson Maj and Hector Carrasco held the Pelicans (46-43, 26-15) scoreless the rest of the way, each working a shutout inning.
During the penultimate home game of the regular season, the Captains honored clubhouse manager John Farmer as the Clubbie of the Year, along with Garcia and Osvaldo Rodriguez as the Shreveport Times Most Valuable Player and Pitcher, respectively, of the 2010 season. The club also presented autographed bats to the bat boys who have worked tirelessly throughout the season.
