El Paso Nabs Sweep in Iowa

Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The El Paso Chihuahuas (39-21) scored early and often to execute the sweep with an 8-5 victory over the Iowa Cubs (34-27), Thursday at Principal Park.

El Paso's offense flexed promptly as the Chihuahuas shot out to a 6-0 lead after two and a half. Three of the runs were unearned as a key error on right fielder Mark Zagunis with two outs in the third padded El Paso's lead.

Luis Vazquez put Iowa on the board in the bottom of the third with his first Triple-A home run, sparking a power surge from both teams. Iowa cut the deficit on a two-run Robel Garcia homer in the fourth, but former I-Cub Jason Vosler kept the home team at bay with a homer of his own in the fifth. Donnie Dewees got in on the long ball action with a home run to center in the bottom of the frame to make it a 7-4 El Paso advantage.

The home run brigade continued into the eighth as Vosler put the game well out of reach with his second long ball of the game. Iowa turned a leadoff walk from Wynton Bernard into a run in the ninth, but couldn't make up the difference.

Postgame Notes:

- Luis Vazquez went 2-for-4 with a home run. At 19 years old, he ties Carlos Zambrano as the youngest I-Cub to homer.

- Tony Barnette, with Iowa on rehab, pitched a perfect frame with a strikeout.

- El Paso's sweep of Iowa was its first in franchise history.

The I-Cubs continue the homestand tomorrow with a 7:08 p.m. Firework Friday game against the Albuquerque Isotopes. For more information or tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
