Tacoma Rainiers News Release

TACOMA, Wash. - A trio of early home runs were too much for the Tacoma Rainiers (1-1) to overcome in an 8-2 loss to the Sacramento River Cats (1-1) on Friday night at Cheney Stadium.

A solo blast from Chris Shaw in the top of the first inning and a pair of solo homers from Mac Williamson and Kyle Jensen in the fourth propelled Sacramento out to a 3-0 lead.

The River Cats added to their lead with two runs in the top of the fifth before the Rainiers answered with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. Catcher Garrett Kennedy's first Triple-A home run and a sacrifice fly from second baseman Gordon Beckham cut Sacramento's lead to 5-2.

Sacramento notched three more runs across the seventh and eighth innings, pushing their lead out to the final margin of 8-2.

The Rainiers offense was led by Kennedy, who finished the night going 2-for-4 with a solo home run in just his second career Triple-A game. Shortstop Zach Vincej (2x4) also contributed a pair of base knocks to the effort.

Tacoma starting pitcher Josh Smith (0-1) worked 4.0 innings and allowed three runs on four hits (three home runs) while striking out seven.

The five-game series between the Rainiers and River Cats continues on Saturday, April 7. Right-hander Rob Whalen (0-0, -.--) takes the mound for Tacoma, while Sacramento will hand the ball to righty Tyler Herb (0-0, -.--).
