Sky Sox Split Second Doubleheader Of Series In Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox split the Saturday doubleheader against the Omaha Storm Chasers Saturday afternoon at Werner Park, dropping game one 2-1 and winning game two 3-2.

The Sky Sox dropped game one of the doubleheader in heartbreaking fashion, with the Storm Chasers walking off in the bottom of the seventh inning off a Humberto Arteaga line drive single to go up 2-1, handing the Sky Sox their first loss of the 2018 season.

In game two of the twin bill the Storm Chasers took an early lead in the bottom of the first, but the Sky Sox answered back in the top of the second to make it a 2-1 affair. Omaha rebutted to tie it at two apiece in the third frame before the Sky Sox retook the lead in the fifth inning to go up 3-2 and split the doubleheader.

Burnes-in' It Up : Today marked Corbin Burnes' Triple-A debut and first appearance against the Omaha Storm Chasers, and though he was unable to walk away with the victory, the No. 2-ranked prospect looked stellar in his debut. Burnes threw six innings of five-hit, one-run ball, striking out six and allowing just one walk on the day.

Walking It Off: The Storm Chasers were down to their final out in game one, but a Humberto Arteaga single scored pinch-runner Terrance Gore from second shortly after Gore stole second to put himself in scoring position and Omaha in position to walk-off for their first win of the season.

Taylor Makes an Impression: Tyrone Taylor collected his first hit, run, and RBI of the season in game one, going 2-for-3 and launching a solo homer in the fourth inning. Taylor scored again in game two on a Shane Opitz double.

The Double Double: The doubleheader today marked the first time in Sky Sox history where the Sky Sox started the season with back-to- back doubleheaders. (Thursday's doubleheader was only the third all-time on opening day). The combined four hits allowed in the Sky Sox doubleheader on Thursday also set a new Sky Sox record for the fewest hits allowed in a doubleheader, breaking the previous low of five hits. The fewest hits allowed in a Sky Sox doubleheader at Security Service Field in Colorado Springs is eight hits, done twice.

Looking Back on 2017: The Pacific Coast League American Northern Division Champion Colorado Springs Sky Sox look to capitalize on a phenomenal 2017 season that saw the team finish with a club second-best-ever 80 wins. The Sky Sox ran away with the American Northern division, winning the division by 10 games and making the team's first playoff appearance in two decades. Colorado Springs lost in the first round of the playoffs in five games against the eventual PCL Champion Memphis Redbirds. Colorado Springs slugged 40 runs in the five game playoff series, versus Memphis' 43 runs.

Monday's Expectation : Game 5 of this series is set for an early 10:05 a.m. (MDT) first pitch between right-handers Michael Brady versus Heath Fillmyer, for Colorado Springs and Omaha respectively. After the conclusion of Game 5 the Sky Sox will travel back to Colorado for their scheduled home opener at Security Service Field on Tuesday against the New Orleans Baby Cakes.
