Indianapolis Indians News Release
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Right-handers Tom Shearn, Brad Salmon and Scott Chiasson combined for a one-hit shutout as Louisville rolled to a 4-0 blanking of Indianapolis in front of 11,080 Sunday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
The Bats improve to 75-67 on the season, while the Indians fall to 75-66 overall. Indianapolis slips to second place in the International League's West Division -- one game behind the Toledo Mud Hens (76-65), who posted a 4-3 win over the Columbus Clippers on Sunday evening at Fifth Third Field.
Indianapolis can no longer win the IL's West Division outright. The Indians must defeat Louisville in Monday afternoon's regular-season finale and hope for a Toledo loss to earn a share of the division crown.
Three of the four International League playoff teams have already been decided. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (83-58) has clinched the North Division, while Charlotte (79-61) has won the South Division and Rochester (79-63) will be the Wild Card club.
Shearn (6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 SO) improved to 9-4 with the win, while Salmon (2.0 IP, 1 BB, 4 SO) notched his seventh hold and Chiasson (1.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 SO) got through the final inning in a non-save situation. The Louisville trio combined for 14 strikeouts on the night to tie a season high.
Louisville scored all the runs it would need in the second inning. RF Cody Strait, LF Matt Kata and C Dane Sardinha drew three consecutive walks before 2B William Bergolla was hit by a pitch. SS Ray Olmedo followed with a two-run single up the middle to plate Kata and Sardinha.
The Bats added an insurance run in the eighth when Kata was plunked before eventually scoring on Bergolla's base knock to center.
Olemedo led the home team by going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Bergolla added two RBI, while Sardinha registered two hits and Kata scored a pair of runs.
C Carlos Maldonado had the visiting team's only hit -- a single to left with one out in the second. Indians LHP Sean Burnett (5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 3 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 8-11.
The clubs return to Louisville Slugger Field Monday afternoon at 1:15 p.m., to wrap up their respective regular-season schedules. LHP Shane Youman is slated to start for the Indians, while LHP Phil Dumatrait is expected to get the nod for the Bats.
The game will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com as Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley have the call. Monday's pre-game show begins at 12:55 p.m.
