TODAY'S GAME: The third of a four game series and the 15th of 16 meetings vs. the Knights. The seventh of eight at Knights Stadium. Richmond is 6-8 vs. the Knights, 3-3 at Knights Stadium. Game three of a four game season ending road trip (Richmond is 1-1). The 47th of 48 meetings vs. South Division clubs (Braves are 24-22 vs. the South) and the 23rd of 24 contests on the road vs. the South (Richmond is 10-12). The Braves were 8-8 vs. the Knights last season, 4-4 at Knights Stadium. The Braves are 106-122 all-time vs. Charlotte. The Braves are in fourth place in the South, a game behind Norfolk. Charlotte is the South Division champion. They lead the division by 15.5 games.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: - The Braves beat the Knights 3-2 Saturday at Knights Stadium. The Braves rallied for two runs in the eighth inning for the come from behind win. Richmond took a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI double by Wes Timmons. That lead held up until the seventh when the Knights tallied twice to take the lead on a misplayed ground ball. The Braves bounced back in the eighth on a two run double by Dax Norris to give the Braves a 3-2 lead. Will Startup picked up the win. Manny Acosta collected the save. Paulino Reynoso took the loss. Gregor Blanco had three hits for the Braves. Tony Torcato had two hits for the Knights.
IT ONLY TAKES NINE TO PLAY: The Braves lost two more pitchers to major league call-ups yesterday. RHP Anthony Lerew and RHP Peter Moylan were promoted to Atlanta. Seven R-Braves have earned big league callups in the last two days. Richmond's active roster now stands at 19 (nine pitchers, two catchers, four infielders, and four outfielders). The Braves have made 114 roster moves this season. 21 different Braves have been promoted to Atlanta. Moylan was summoned to Atlanta for the fourth time this season. He had 54 strikeouts in 56.2 innings with Richmond this season. Lerew earned his second call-up and made his first MLB appearance of 2006 last night. He had 30 strikeouts in 23 innings in his last four starts with Richmond. Lerew was also four for five at the plate and hit a game-tying three run homer in his last start. 17 players on Atlanta's current active roster were promoted from Richmond, including 11 pitchers. In addition to the seven players called up from Richmond in the last two days, RHP Joey Devine, who was with Richmond briefly earlier this season, was promoted from Double-A Mississippi.
SPELLING RELEIF: Jonathan Johnson has 12 strikeouts in his last 7.1 innings. He has allowed just two earned runs in his last 12 outings over 18.2 innings pitched (0.96 ERA). Manny Acosta has not allowed a run in his last six appearances over fsix innings. Will Startup has allowed one earned run in his last 11 appearances over 14.1 innings (0.71 ERA). After allowing four runs in his first two outings with the Braves, Rich Scalamandre has not allowed a run in eight straight appearances over nine innings.
NUMBERS OF NOTE: Richmond has a winning record against South Division clubs (24-22). They are a combined 33 games under .500 vs. the North and West. Braves pitchers finished the season 19-85 at the plate (.224). Richmond pinch hitters are 9-57 (.158). The Braves are 36-58 vs. American League affiliates. Richmond is 3-17 in weekend road games. The Braves are tied with Toledo and Buffalo for second in the league in extra-inning games played (17). Richmond is 5-12 in extra innings. Rochester leads the league with 20. The Braves are tied with Norfolk for most wins when trailing after eight innings (4). The Braves are .500 on the road against Charlotte and Norfolk and finished below .500 on the road vs. every other IL club. Richmond is 11-24 in day games (.314).
