Rochester Red Wings News Release
Red Barons pitcher Jeremy Cummings pitched a no-hitter, while the Scranton offense pounded out 16 hits in a 5-0 win over the Red Wings Sunday night at Frontier Field. The two teams will finish the regular season with an afternoon game Monday, before beginning a best-of-five playoff series at Frontier Field Wednesday night.
Cummings finished with nine strikeouts and four walks, facing just 29 batters, two over the minimum 27. He threw 137 pitches on the night, 84 for strikes, and his last pitch he was clocked at 89 miles per hour on the radar. Mike Pazik was the last pitcher to no-hit Rochester in a nine-inning game, turning the trick for Syracuse on Aug. 31, 1971. Cummings became the first pitcher to toss a nine-inning no-hitter in team history; four pitchers have had a seven-inning no-hitter, and four others had nine inning one-hitters.
Recently promoted starter Glen Perkins did not make it easy on himself to begin his Red Wing career, but the lefty was able to work out of it. Red Baron Carlos Leon hit Perkins' second pitch of the night, doubling to right field. After a soft line out, Perkins walked two Red Barons to load the bases with one out before retiring the next two Barons to end the inning. In the second, Perkins retired the first two batters, making it four straight, before walking his third Red Baron of the night. Perkins then gave up his second hit to Leon before escaping with a grounder to first for another scoreless inning.
At the plate, the first six Wings were retired by Cummings, who struck out three batters in his first two innings. Terry Tiffee had the best chance to get on base, but his soft liner to second was pulled down by a leaping Leon.
Perkins had two runners on with two outs in the third inning, but again he escaped to keep the score knotted, 0-0. Perkins had thrown 76 pitches through three innings, and seven Red Barons were left on base in that time. Perkins mowed three straight Barons down in the fourth, but in the fifth Scranton finally took advantage of their baserunners. Perkins allowed three singles and a walk to the first four batters in the fifth, with Jim Rushford knocking in Gary Burnham for a 1-0 Red Baron lead. Perkins' debut ended at this point, and Dave Gassner made a rare relief appearance. Gassner entered with runners at first and second and one out, and he retired the next two batters to keep the game close.
Meanwhile, Cummings was holding onto a perfect game entering the fifth, after recording 12 straight outs including four strikeouts. Cummings made it 13 straight before he walked Tiffee and Kevin West for the first two Wings baserunners of the night. Alex Romero hit into a double play to end the fifth, and Cummings' no-hitter stayed intact. Cummings walked Andres Torres in the sixth, but he caught Torres a little too far off first and picked him off to end another hitless inning.
In the seventh Scranton led off with three straight singles off Gassner, loading the bases, before using two sacrifice flys to plate Burnham and Brennan King for a 3-0 advantage. After Gassner gave up another single to put runners on first and second, Matt Ford replaced Gassner and ended the inning with a quick out.
Quinton McCracken hit a deep shot in the seventh, but the no-hitter stood as the ball was hauled in at the right field warning track. Cummings struck out Gil Velazquez and Garrett Jones around the McCracken fly ball, and the Wings offense continued to struggle.
Scranton had a pair of two-out doubles and an RBI single to raise the score to 5-0 in the eighth, before Kevin Cameron entered and allowed just one hit and no runs to finish out the night on the mound for the Wings.
