Norfolk Tides News Release
September 3, 2006 - Jose Lima turned in a fantastic outing in his season finale, pitching the Tides to a 1-0 win over the Durham Bulls in front of 11,071 fans at Harbor Park Sunday night.
Lima (7-8) was dominant in his final regular season start, scattering six hits without walking a batter in eight scoreless innings. The right-hander struck out four in the contest, helping the Tides pick up their 4th straight win, which tied a season-high.
The Tides plated the only run of the game in the third inning, as Lastings Milledge led off with a single to left off of Durham starter Jim Magrane (1-4) and moved to third on a single by Ruben Gotay. Jose Offerman then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Milledge with the game's only run.
Durham nearly tied the score in the 6th inning, but the Tides escaped unscathed thanks to a flawless relay throw to cut down a run at the plate. With Luis Ordaz on first with one out, Shawn Riggans laced a double into left-center field, with Milledge fielding the ball near the base of the outfield wall. Ordaz sprinted towards home with what looked to be the tying run, but Milledge hit shortstop Chris Basak in stride with a perfect throw that Basak then relayed home. Tides' catcher Sandy Martinez received the online throw and blocked the plate, retiring Ordaz to keep the Bulls off the scoreboard.
Lima then retired seven of the last eight hitters, and Mitch Wylie came on to pitch a perfect ninth and record his first save of the season, helping the Tides to their 13th shutout of the year.
The Tides will conclude their 2006 season with a Labor Day matinee Monday afternoon from Harbor Park. Yusaku Iriki (3-8, 5.02) is scheduled to take the hill for Norfolk against Durham southpaw Chris Seddon (9-8, 4.91), with first pitch slated for 1:15 p.m.
