Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, KY - The Y'alls scored a combined eight runs on eight hits across the first three innings against Gateway, and though Florence went scoreless the rest of the ballgame, the early scoring was more than enough on the way to an 8-4 victory over the Grizzlies Friday night.
Florence scored four runs (three earned) in the first inning, highlighted by a Chad Sedio RBI-double. Jordan Brower and Axel Johnson added runs batted in on ground balls. The offense carried over into the third inning with another RBI-hit for Sedio and a two-run double for Joe Lytle to give the Y'alls a 7-0 lead. After a three-run top of the third inning for Grizzlies, Florence got a run back with a Bryan Leef solo home run in the third to finish the scoring for Florence.
The win makes it three-in-a-row for the Y'alls (38-25) after a tough stretch of six losses in seven games. The win is the sixth of the season head-to-head against the Grizzlies (28-36).
Gateway's scoring in the third inning came on a solo home run for Dustin Woodcock and a two-run home run off the bat of Nick Rotola. The Rotola long ball fit the name; it traveled 429 feet, high off the left-center field scoreboard at Y'alls Ballpark. Jay Prather added an RBI-single in the sixth inning for the Grizzlies.
Florence starting pitcher Joniaker Villalobos lasted six innings, and all four runs were earned. He struck out three, walked one, and scattered eight hits. Jorge Tavarez fared much worse for Gateway: five innings, nine hits, eight runs (six earned), three walks, and five strikeouts. Colton Easterwood and Carson Cupo combined for three scoreless and hitless innings of relief for the Grizzles, while Edgar Martinez picks up a three-inning save in his first relief appearance of the season for the Y'alls.
The two teams rematch tomorrow, Saturday, August 7, at 6:31p ET. Kevin Hahn gets the ball for Florence in search of the series sweep. Gates at Y'alls Ballpark open an hour prior to first pitch.
