SCHAUMBURG, IL - The ThunderBolts jumped out to a 6-0 lead early in Schaumburg Friday night and cruised to an 8-3 win over the Boomers in the opener of a three-game weekend series at Wintrust Field.
After a scoreless first two innings, the ThunderBolts (27-36) got back-to-back singles from Donivan Williams and John Sechen before Payton Robertson hit his first professional home run, a three-run shot that made the score 3-0.
A wild fourth inning doubled the lead. Zach Racusin hit a leadoff single and Rob Weissheier followed with a slow grounder to short. Schaumburg's Matt McGarry's throw went into right field, allowing Racusin to come all the way around to score. Jack Strunc then hit an RBI double. Williams knocked him in with a single.
Schaumburg (34-29) chipped away with single runs in three straight innings. Nick Oddo and Christian Kuzemka picked up RBI hits and the score was 6-3 at the end of the sixth.
The ThunderBolts put the game away with a pair of late runs. John Sechen was hit by a pitch to start the seventh and later came around to score on a wild pitch. In the eighth, Racusin singled and Weissheier doubled him in to finish the scoring.
Kenny Mathews (4-8) allowed three runs over six innings and picked up the win with his sixth quality start out of his last seven outings. Layne Schnitz-Paxton and Cal Djuraskovic combined for three perfect innings out of the bullpen. Andrew Dean allowed seven runs in seven innings and took the loss.
