Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

The Pawtucket Red Sox raced out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and it was just enough offense on the evening as the PawSox battle to a 6-5 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees.

Trailing 6-2 heading into the ninth inning, the Yankees scored three runs to crawl back to a one-run deficit. With runners on second and third Jorge Vazquez struck out to end the ballgame and send the 6,374 in attendance home happy.

The first run of the game was scored in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by newly named International League all-star Bubba Bell. The PawSox then exploded for four runs in the second inning to give them the cushion that proved to be just enough on a crisp summer evening in Pawtucket.

With one out in the second inning and a pair of runners on base, Tug Hulett doubled to right field. The hit scored Aaron Bates and Ryan Kalish to make it 3-0 PawSox. The next batter, Juan Apodaca, launched a homerun to left center field- tossing his bat toward the Pawtucket dugout on contact, knowing he had just hit his first career triple-A homerun.

Not known for his power, it took just four games for Apodaca to hit his first homerun with the PawSox. In 41 games with Portland prior to his call-up, the PawSox' new starting catcher had hit two homeruns. Since being promoted from Portland, Apodaca has hit .286.

PawSox starter Felix Doubront cruised through the first four innings, allowing just two hits. In the fifth inning the 22-year old surrendered hits to Reid Gorecki and Reegie Corona to begin the inning. After loading the bases with a walk, Doubront proceeded to walk in Gorecki, and Corona later came around to score on a Marcus Thames groundball that found a hole through the left side. The bases remained loaded following the RBI single, but Doubront struck out the next batter for the second out of the inning before ended the inning by striking out the Jesus Montero on a 3-2 changeup that registered 77 MPH on the McCoy Stadium radar gun. The native Venezuelan finished the evening with four strikeouts over five innings in victory.

In his first action since being designated from Boston, lefty Fabio Castro tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Doubront. Castro allowed two singles over the two innings, but the two baserunners he allowed to reach understates how dominant his outing was. Of the six outs he recorded, five were strikeouts.

Left-hander Tommy Hottovy ran into some trouble to begin the ninth inning and Fernando Cabrera was called upon to slam the door with the 6-2 lead. Cabrera ran into some trouble himself, allowing the first three runners he faced to reach base before recording the final out to earn his eleventh save of the season.

The four-game series will continue with game three Thursday evening. Pawtucket's Kris Johnson (3-6, 4.99 ERA) will duel Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's Romulo Sanchez (5-2, 3.00 ERA) beginning at 6:05 p.m.
