COLUMBUS, Ohio -- First baseman Jordan Brown hit a bases-clearing, three-run double with two outs in the fourth inning and the Columbus Clippers scored five runs in the frame to break open a close contest and defeat the Indianapolis Indians 7-3 on Wednesday night at Huntington Park.
With the loss, Indianapolis' record falls to 44-36, while Columbus improves to 48-32 on the season. The victory also gives the Clippers a four-game lead over the Indians in the International League West Division standings.
After the Columbus offense scratched out two runs on three hits and an error to begin the fourth, Brown stepped to the plate with two men down and the bases loaded with Clippers. The Columbus first baseman found himself in an early 1-2 hole, but, on the fourth pitch of his at-bat, Brown lined the offering out to deep center field to plate all three base runners and give the Clippers a 6-2 lead.
Before the Clippers' second five-run fourth inning in two nights, Indianapolis jumped out to a quick two-run lead in the top half of the first inning. LF Kevin Melillo doubled to lead off the frame, and, after an out, CF Alex Presley launched the second home run of his Triple-A career out to right field to give the Tribe a 2-0 advantage.
Columbus scored a single run in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Brown to cut the Indians' lead to 2-1, before the Clippers eventually overcame the one-run deficit with five runs in the pivotal fourth inning rally.
With the score still standing at 6-2 in Columbus' favor, Presley introduced himself to the Clippers' faithful once again in the top of the seventh with his second home run of the contest to cut the Tribe's deficit to 6-3. The Indians' outfielder patiently watched the first four pitches sail in for two balls and two strikes before pouncing on the fifth offering for his third home run of the season.
The Clippers tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on a two-out, run-scoring double by C Chris Gimenez to take the decisive 7-3 lead.
Columbus RHP Carlos Carrasco (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 5 BB, 6 SO) limited the Tribe offense to two runs in five innings of work to earn his sixth win in six starts against Indianapolis since the beginning of the 2009 season. Indians' RHP Anthony Claggett (1.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO) was saddled with his first loss of the season after allowing five runs in 1.2 innings of work in relief of starter Mike Crotta (2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO).
Brown (3-for-3, 2 2B, 4 RBI) and LF Michael Brantley (3-for-5, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI) led the way for the Clippers' offense with three hits apiece, while Presley (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI) was the only Indians' batter to record more than one hit in the contest for the Tribe.
Indianapolis now heads home for two more contests against the Columbus Clippers beginning on Thursday, July 1 at 7:00 p.m. RHP Jeremy Powell is expected to get the call for the Indians, while RHP Jeanmar Gomez is the probable starter for the Clippers.
The contest will be carried by WXLW-950 AM and broadcast live on Comcast and Bright House Networks digital channel 81 with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. The pre-game show on WXLW-950 AM begins at 6:40 p.m.
