International League Announces 2010 All-Star Team Roster
Published on June 30, 2010 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League today announced the members of its 2010 All-Star team. The squad of 30 IL standouts will take on the Pacific Coast League's best in the 23rd annual Triple-A All-Star Game, slated for July 14 in Lehigh Valley. First pitch is set for 7:07 p.m. eastern time and can be seen live on MLB Network.
The 2010 International League All-Star squad is made up of 13 elected players who have received the most votes from ballots submitted by clubs' field managers and general managers (1/3), members of the media (1/3), and online fan voting (1/3). The elected players are joined by 17 additional All-Stars selected by the International League office. Each of the IL's 14 clubs will be represented in Lehigh Valley.
Leading the way with four players on the Team is the host Lehigh Valley IronPigs, who received strong support from their fans in the online voting. Four IronPigs will be playing as All-Stars in their home ballpark, including three elected All-Stars in first baseman Andy Tracy, third baseman Cody Ransom, and reliever Scott Mathieson. Starting pitcher Nate Bump was also selected to the Team from Lehigh Valley.
The IL All-Star manager, Charlie Montoyo of Durham, will have three of his Bulls at his disposal on the roster. Dan Johnson, who leads the League in RBI with 63, was elected to the squad as the designated hitter and will be joined by infielders Joe Dillon and Elliot Johnson. The defending Triple-A National Champions, and current IL South Division leaders, also enjoyed a strong push from their fan base in online voting.
Charlotte and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre also boast three All-Stars apiece. The Knights tied Lehigh Valley with three players earning elected positions, including both starting pitchers and the catcher slot. Dan Hudson (currently tied for the IL lead with 10 wins and 97 strikeouts) and Carlos Torres (a three-time IL Pitcher of the Week) are joined by Knights catcher Tyler Flowers. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre closer Jonathan Albaladejo (leads IL with 24 saves) and shortstop Eduardo Nunez (leads IL with 97 hits) were both elected, while catcher Jesus Montero was selected to the All-Star Team.
Six members of the Team will be making a return trip to the Triple-A All-Star Game in 2010, a group highlighted by last year's IL Top Star winner, Erik Kratz of Indianapolis. Gwinnett 1B/DH Barbaro Canizares will be making his third consecutive All-Star Game appearance, something just three others have done (Roberto Petagine 1996-98, Todd Williams 1998-2000, and Ernie Young 2004-06). It will also be the third Triple-A All-Star Game for Andy Tracy (2000, 2009). Joe Dillon (2004), Cody Ransom (2001), and Carlos Torres (2009) are all back for a second time.
The International League and Pacific Coast League have traded 6-5 victories at the last two Triple-A All-Star Games, meaning the series is tied (6-6) in the 12 years since the Game changed to the current IL vs. PCL format. The winning League this season will once again earn the right to have its champion play as the "home team" at the Triple-A National Championship Game in Oklahoma City this September.
