Modesto Nuts News Release

Lancaster, CA. - After giving up five runs in the first three innings, the Modesto Nuts comeback attempt fell shy in a 7-4 loss to the Lancaster JetHawks on Saturday night to open a four-game series at The Hangar.

Carlos Polanco (L, 1-4) was unable to work through a shaky start allowing five runs over 2.1 innings for the Nuts (21-34). Brooks Marlow cranked a two-run homer to put the JetHawks (29-26) on the board in the first. An error in right allowed the second run to score in the second inning. Drew Ferguson drove in another run with a RBI single in the third before Polanco was pulled with the bases loaded. One more run scored on a wild pitch after that.

Scott Weathersby (W, 2-3) tossed five scoreless frames with a season-high-tying five strikeouts in his start for the JetHawks. The Nuts began their comeback against JetHawks reliever Brock Dykxhoorn starting in the sixth.

Shane Hoelscher clubbed a two-run double in the sixth. Hoelscher finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and a run scored. Dom Nunez followed with a RBI of his own. In the seventh, Wes Rogers knocked in a run with a single but the Nuts stranded the tying and go-ahead runs on the bases.

After the JetHawks put up a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth, Ryan Deemes (S, 3/3) worked around a single in the ninth to shut the door.

Game two of the four-game set with the JetHawks starts at 2:05 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 2:00 p.m. Listen live online. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
