San Jose Giants News Release
SAN JOSE, CA - Bakersfield's Joe DeCarlo hit a third-inning two-run homer and the Giants were held to just one hit offensively in a 2-1 Blaze victory over San Jose on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. The Giants were unable to take advantage of nine walks in dropping the opener of the four-game series.
Four Bakersfield pitchers - Lukas Schiraldi, Aaron Brooks, Thyago Vieira and Kyle Schepel - combined on a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Brooks (3-1) earned the win after tossing three no-hit innings of relief over the fifth, sixth and seventh frames. Schepel pitched the bottom of the ninth for his sixth save of the year.
San Jose starter Martin Agosta (3-1) suffered the loss despite matching a season-high with seven innings pitched. Agosta surrendered two runs and four hits during his outing. The right-hander walked one and struck out three.
The Giants' only run and hit of the contest came in the bottom of the first. With one out, Steven Duggar struck out, but reached base safely when Schiraldi's pitch bounced away from catcher Tyler Marlette. Duggar then moved into second on another wild pitch and after C.J Hinojosa flied out, Jonah Arenado grounded an RBI single up the middle to give San Jose a 1-0 lead. Arenado's single would be the lone Giants hit of the night.
Agosta faced the minimum six hitters over the first two innings before running into trouble in the top of the third. Austin Wilson was hit by a pitch to start the frame before DeCarlo stepped to the plate and launched a towering two-run homer to left. The home run, DeCarlo's second of the season, gave the Blaze a 2-1 lead.
The Giants had an opportunity to answer in the bottom of the third against Schiraldi, but left the bases loaded. With two outs, Arenado struck out, but was able to reach base on a wild pitch. A walk to Jose Vizcaino, Jr. followed before Daniel Carbonell was hit by a pitch. However, Cristian Paulino, with the bases loaded, popped out on the first pitch of his at-bat to end the threat.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jared Deacon drew a leadoff walk before a two-out walk to Duggar, but Hinojosa struck out swinging to retire the side. San Jose left eight runners on base over the first four innings.
Agosta settled down after the third-inning homer and allowed just two hits over the remainder of his start - a bunt single from Drew Jackson in the third and a two-out single off the bat of Arby Fields in the top of the fifth. Agosta retired 14 out of the final 17 batters he faced.
Meanwhile, Schiraldi pitched just the first four innings for Bakersfield. The Blaze starter allowed one run and one hit with six walks and seven strikeouts. Schiraldi threw six wild pitches during his four-inning appearance.
With Bakersfield still ahead 2-1, Brooks entered from the bullpen to begin the bottom of the fifth and retired nine out of ten batters faced over the next three innings. Brooks worked 1-2-3 fifth and sixth frames before pitching around a one-out walk to Duggar in the bottom of the seventh.
In the bottom of the eighth with Vieira pitching, Vizcaino drew a leadoff walk to put the potential tying run on base. After Carbonell struck out, Paulino grounded into a fielder's choice with Vizcaino forced out at second. Paulino then stole second, but was stranded there when Deacon grounded out.
Schepel was then summoned to begin the bottom of the ninth and quickly set down the first two batters as Robbie Garvey grounded out and Jebavy lined out to third on a diving catch made by DeCarlo. Duggar followed by drawing a full-count walk to again put the tying run on base, but Hinojosa flied out to shallow right to end the game.
