Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Lake County's Mike Conroy put Greensboro in an early hole and the Captains held on to nip the Grasshoppers 7-6 Monday night at First Horizon Park.

With the loss, the Hoppers (27-23) dropped back into a tie for third place in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League with Lakewood, which beat West Virginia. They also dropped four games behind Lexington, which took over first place by beating Delmarva.

Conroy cracked two home runs, a solo shot in the second inning and a grand slam in the third, to help stake Lake County to a 7-0 lead. Both came off Hoppers starter David Humen.

Humen also gave up a run in the first inning on Matt Fornasiere's RBI single. In the fifth, Humen walked the bases full and hit Johnny Drennen to force in the first run. Conroy capped the five-run inning with his seventh homer of the year, the only hit of the inning.

The Hoppers chipped away at the lead, picking up a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Gaby Sanchez. Greensboro added three more in the seventh. Kris Harvey lined his 11th homer of the year, a two-run shot, to left field and Trent D'Antonio doubled in another run to cut the lead to 7-4.

Sanchez belted a two-run homer in the eighth, his 14th of the season, to bring the Hoppers within one.

Lake County closer Matt Davis gave up a leadoff walk in the ninth to Jared Gaston, but escaped further trouble and recorded his 13th save of the season.

Jim Deters (3-3) picked up the win for the Captains. A bright spot for Greensboro was the relief pitching of Todd Doolittle, Mauro Zarate and Marc LaMacchia, who combined for six shutout innings. Doolittle struck out four in two innings.

The teams wrap up the series today at 12:30 p.m. in First Horizon Park.
