Conroy powers Captains over Grasshoppers

(Greensboro, NC)--Mike Conroy hit a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, as the Lake County Captains defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers 7-6 Monday night at First Horizon Park.

Conroy slugged a solo shot in the second inning and came back with a grand slam in the third against David Humen (1-1). Conroy connected in the third after Humen walked the bases loaded. The grand slam gave the Captains a 7-0 lead.

The Grasshoppers (27-23) chipped away and pulled to within 7-6 entering the ninth. Matt Davis came on the scene and pitched a scoreless ninth to post his 13th save.

Jim Deters (3-3) earned the win for the Captains (24-27). Deters pitched 6 1/3 innings without walking a batter. He allowed three runs, and left after giving up a two-run homer to Kris Harvey in the seventh to make it 7-3.

The Grasshoppers rallied for three runs against reliever Jorge Riera and had the tying run on second in the eighth, but righthander Dustin Roddy came on to strike out Andy Jenkins to strand the runner.

Conroy is the first Captains player to hit two homers in a game this season. He now has seven homers and a team-high 30 RBI on the season.

The Captains and Grasshoppers will wrap up the series with a 12:30 PM game on Tuesday. After an off-day Wednesday, the Captains will open a four-game homestand at Classic Park on Thursday night. For tickets, call 440-954-WINS.
