Early Deficit Dooms Shorebirds in 7-3 Loss

Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, Md. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds failed to overcome a five-run first inning by the West Virginia Power in a 7-3 loss at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday night.

With two aboard and two out, the Power ripped four straight hits off of Brian Gonzalez to build a 5-0 lead after one frame.

Gonzalez struggled to find his rhythm in a short outing, allowing six runs on a season-high seven hits while throwing three wild pitches in three innings.

The Shorebirds offense awoke in the bottom of the third when Cam Kneeland singled home Tanner Murphy for Delmarva's first run of the ballgame. The 'Birds added a second run when Logan Uxa scored Jay Gonzalez on a fielder's choice, but the rally ended abruptly when Kneeland was thrown out at home attempting to score.

After West Virginia answered with a run in the top of the fourth, the Shorebirds bounced back in the fifth when Ronarsy Ledesma smacked a one-out double and scored shortly after on a Jay Gonzalez single to cut the deficit to 6-3. Jomar Reyes then came to the plate with the bases loaded later in the inning, but was thrown out at first on a close play to end the threat.

Three Shorebirds pitchers made their 2015 debut with Delmarva out of the bullpen during the contest. Lucas Long relieved Brian Gonzalez and retired all eight batters he faced for three scoreless innings. Max Schuh then came on and struck out two batters in two innings while allowing one run before Nigel Nootbaar pitched a scoreless ninth.

Delmarva will look to retake the series lead on a Saturday Fireworks Night presented by the Delaware State Education Association. Matthew Grimes (3-2, 4.57) will get the start for the Shorebirds against Stephen Tarpley (1-0, 1.80).
