Charleston RiverDogs News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Charleston RiverDogs trailed by just one in the bottom of the sixth, but the Savannah Sand Gnats piled on six runs over the following two innings and went on to win 10-6 Friday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.
A two-out, bases loaded triple by Austin Aune highlighted the RiverDogs' three-run top of the sixth. Aune nearly missed a grand slam that would have tied the game as the ball bounced off the wall in right field. Trailing 4-3 was the closest Charleston would get Friday night.
The Sand Gnats (23-25) responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame. Savannah loaded the bases and came through with an RBI single by Wuilmer Becerra. Sean Carley made a throwing error and two fielding errors that allowed the other three runs to score. The Sand Gnats added insurance to their lead in the bottom of the seventh. Becerra blasted a two-run triple to center that extended their lead to 10-3.
Charleston had another three-run inning in the top of the eighth. Connor Spencer hit a one-out single to center. Vince Conde followed with a double to left, and then Austin Aune drove in Spencer with a single. After a pitching change, Alexander Palma grounded into a fielder's choice that brought home Conde from third. The next batter, Radley Haddad, hit a triple that scored Palma and cut Savannah's lead to 10-6.
The RiverDogs (23-25) went down in order in the ninth inning. Martires Arias (3-3) earned the win, while Jordan Montgomery (4-3) took the loss. Arias pitched 5 2/3 innings and held the RiverDogs scoreless through the first five before allowing three in the sixth. Montgomery gave up three runs as well and only lasted four innings.
With the loss, Charleston's losing streak extends to five games. Savannah has won the first two games of this four-game series.
