Hickory Crawdads News Release
Hickory, NC - The Hickory Crawdads and Rome Braves were finally able to finish the game they began Thursday night on Friday night, but the rain suspended battle went against the 'Dads as they lost to the Braves 7-3 in front of a season-high crowd of 4,423 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium.
Both Hickory and Rome entered the game riding 5-game winning streaks, with the 'Dads fresh off a 3-game series sweep of the Delmarva Shorebirds, while the Braves had just swept their series in Charleston against the RiverDogs. The first six frames of the night yielded no clue as to who would continue their streak as the game was tied at 2-2, but Rome pulled away late with six runs over the final four innings to snap the 'Dads streak and extend their own.
The Crawdads and Braves began play Thursday night for game one of their 4-game series, but two outs into the contest the rain came down and the game was eventually suspended. The two clubs picked up where they left off roughly 24 hours later, with Rome batting in the top of the 1st with two on, two out, and first baseman Matt Tellor at the plate with a 2-1 count. Austin Pettibone began the game for the 'Dads on Thursday, but when play resumed it was Collin Wiles on the mound when Tellor lined an RBI single to left for an early 1-0 Braves lead.
Hickory tied the game up at 1-1 in the 4th when Eduard Pinto drove in Luke Tendler with an RBI groundout. The Crawdads took the lead in the next inning with Rock Shoulders roping a leadoff double to center field before Josh Morgan drove him in on an RBI single for a 2-1 'Dads advantage.
Rome quickly responded with a run of their own in the top 6th to tie the game again at 2-2, before they broke things open with a 3-run top of the 7th to chase Wiles from the game and take a 5-2 lead. The Braves tacked on another tally in the top of 8th to stretch the score to 6-2 before the Crawdads mounted a rally in the bottom of the frame. A leadoff single from Michael De Leon and two errors by Rome third baseman Omar Obregon brought in a run for the 'Dads to cut the deficit 6-3. Shoulders followed with a hit-by-pitch to load the bases and bring Marcus Greene to the plate representing the go-ahead run. Greene worked the count to 3-1 before lofting a ball to deep left field, but the potential grand slam died at the wall to end the inning and the Crawdads rally.
The Braves tacked on one last run in the top of the 9th to end the game with the final 7-3 score.
Caleb Beech (5-2) earned the win for Rome with two runs allowed on four hits, two walks, and six strikeouts over 7 innings pitched. Wiles (5-2) took the loss for Hickory after allowing four runs on seven hits, one walk, and 4 Ks over 5.1 IP.
Morgan (2-3, RBI, BB, SB) and De Leon (2-5) both finished with multi-hit games, while Shoulders ended the night 1-3 with a double and a run scored.
The Crawdads (32-15) and Braves (23-24) will play a doubleheader on Saturday, with first pitch for game one scheduled for 4:30 pm.
