Eagles Win Ninth Straight Over Scorpions 5-1

RIO RANCHO, NM- The Colorado Eagles won their ninth straight game Wednesday night 5-1 against the New Mexico Scorpions at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. Colorado scored two shorthanded goals by Ed McGrane and Aaron Schneekloth adding to their league-leading total of 19 shorthanded goals on the season. The power play unit added two power play goals as the Eagles are now 20-4-0 with the best record in the Central Hockey League. Marco Emond stopped 36 of 37 shots for his seventh straight victory. The Eagles have not lost since December 1st against the Odessa Jackalopes and will go home for two games this weekend at the Budweiser Events Center.

Kevin Harvey gave the Scorpions a 1-0 lead only 2:32 into the first period on assists from Aaron MacInnis and Josh Garbutt. The Eagles answered only one minute later when Craig Strain took a feed from Ed McGrane and beat New Mexico goaltender Scott Reid. The goal marked Strain's fifth of the season and 15th point, he leads all rookie defensemen in points in the league this season. Colorado took a 2-1 lead on their 18th shorthanded goal of the season when Ryan Tobler stole a pass and fed Ed McGrane who lit the lamp at the 6:50 mark of the period. The Eagles took the one-goal lead into the period, but the teams were even with 10 shots each.

Colorado scored the lone tally in the second period on another shorthanded goal, their second of the game and 19th of the season. Aaron Schneekloth scored on assists from Ed McGrane and Scott Polaski. Colorado has not lost a game in which Aaron Schneekloth has scored a point to date. The record for shorthanded goals in a season is 27 set by Dallas in 1993-94, the Eagles are only eight away from tying the record with 40 games to play in the season.

Chris Hartsburg gave the Eagles a 4-1 lead only 21 seconds into the third period on assists from Ryan Tobler and Riley Nelson. The same three players connected again for a power play goal at the 13:11 mark, Hartsburg from Nelson and Tobler giving Colorado a 5-1 lead. The score would remain 5-1 as the Eagles won their ninth consecutive game. Colorado heads home for two games this weekend at the Budweiser Events Center. Wichita heads to Colorado on Friday night and the Austin Ice Bats will play at the BEC for the first time in team history.
