WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - The Colorado Eagles (8-3-0-0) claimed their first shootout victory over the Utah Grizzlies (3-4-1-2), 4-3, at the Maverik Center on Tuesday evening.
The Grizzlies took the 1-0 lead 7:07 into the second period, as Utah forward Howard Lenz caught a pass in the low slot from forward Vincent Scarsella to put the puck, five-hole, past Eagles netminder Doug Carr on the power-play. Four minutes later Eagles forward Taylor Vause answered with a power-play goal of his own to tie the score, 1-1. Eagles forward Chris Duszynski gave Colorado their first lead of the game, 2-1, off of a pass from linemate Vitalijs Pavlovs, 15:01 into the second frame. The Eagles lead didn't last for long as Utah responded with a quick goal from forward Michael Pelech to tie the score, 2-2, just 1:37 later.
Just 5:40 into the third stanza, Utah claimed the 3-2 advantage with a 4-on-4 goal from forward Barry Almedia who stuffed the puck into the net from the top of the crease. Eagles forward Greg Gardner picked up a rebound as Mark Nemec shot the puck at Utah goalie Joe Howe, to tie the game, once more, 3-3, 15:59 into the third.
Regulation time ended with a tied score of 3-3 and that pushed the game into a 4-on-4 sudden-death overtime. The overtime saw no score and the Eagles and Grizzlies headed into a shootout. Eagles forwards Brock Nixon, Vause and Jordan Kwas all got the best of Howe while only one Utah shooter, Mathieu Aubin, won against Carr to secure the 4-3 Eagles victory.
