Alaska Aces News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Niklas Lundstrom furnished a 28 save effort, including a second period penalty shot save, and the Alaska Aces scored twice on the power play en route to a 3-1 victory over the Idaho Steelheads at CenturyLink Arena on Tuesday.
Lundstrom, whose one goal allowed against the Steelheads (carrying the league's greatest goal differential entering the game) was a season low, earned his first win since Oct. 23 at Stockton while defenseman Brad Richard scored both power play goals. Olivier Archambault added a beautiful, highlight-reel goal in the second period for his fifth goal in the last four games.
Richard's snipe from the center point, past the blocker of Olivier Roy, put the Aces ahead 1-0 just 2:25 into the contest. Lundstrom then helped protect the lead when he drew Ludwig Karlsson to the blocker side on a penalty shot 44 seconds into the second period, after Karlsson drew contact on a breakaway.
Archambault's seventh goal of the season boosted the lead to 2-0 with 2:51 left in the second period when he took a rinkwide feed from Greg Wolfe at the left wing, cut to the inside on an Idaho defender and rocketed a backhander past Roy from between the circles.
Idaho capitalized on an early power play goal in the third by Colton Beck on a wrister that trickled in from the right circle at 1:45. But the Aces answered on Richard's second goal of the game, at 5:16 when he stickhandled to the front of the net and slipped a backhander through Roy's five hole.
From there, Lundstrom helped with nine saves in the final period, preserving the Aces win in the first game of the head-to-head series and the first meeting since last year's second round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
NOTES: The Aces scratched Dustin Molle, Justin Breton, Tyler Currier, Bryan Cameron and Andy Bathgate ... the Aces improved to 11-4-3 in the last 18 games against Idaho, including the playoffs ... after going 2-of-32, the Aces power play is now 4-of-17 in the last three games ... Tim Coffman had two assists to extend a streak of points in seven of the last eight games ... Wolfe extended his scoring streak to seven straight games.
Both teams meet again in a rematch tomorrow at 5:10 p.m. (GCI/KFQD) at CenturyLink Arena.
