Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Superb pitching and clutch hitting propelled the Greenville Drive to an 8-1 win Friday night and completed the three-game sweep of the Asheville Tourists at West End Field. A Drive win, coupled with Kannapolis defeating Augusta leaves Greenville just three games back of first place. With the victory, the Drive improved to 14-8 in the second half of the season.
After being no-hit through the first two innings, the Drive jumped all over Tourists starter Zach Simons in the bottom of the third for four runs. Greenville got four consecutive hits to lead off the inning with Dominic Ramos doubling home Christian Lara and Yahmed Yema hitting his seventh triple of the season to score Mickey Hall and Ramos. One batter later, Luis Soto hit a sacrifice fly to center, knocking in Yema.
The Tourists collected their only run in the top of the fifth against Buchholz. Daniel Carte led off the inning with his tenth home run of the season. It would be the only mistake Buchholz made in his five innings of work, as he allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out five en route to picking up his fifth win of the season.
Greenville's offense continued to roll as they scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Soto hit a one-out single before Chris Turner belted his team-leading 17th long ball of the season over the Green Monster.
The Drive would add another run versus Simons in the bottom of the sixth. Lara and Hall led off the inning with back-to-back singles allowing Lara to wind up on third. Lara would then score on Ramos' groundout.
Ismael Casillas and Hunter Jones then combined to mow down Tourists over four shutout innings of relief, with each tossing two innings. The two allowed just one hit and a walk while striking out five. Over the three-game series the Greenville bullpen allowed just one run over 13 innings.
Greenville scored one more run in the bottom of the eighth to add insult to injury. With one out, Yema singled home Hall to give the Drive a seven run lead. In the series, the Drive offense tagged Tourists pitching for 41 hits.
The Drive begin a four-game series in Rome versus the Braves tomorrow evening with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Greenville will send right-hander Michael Bowden to the mound as Rome counters with right-hander Phil Stockman.
The Drive return home Wednesday, July 19th for a four-game series with the Savannah Sand Gnats, South Atlantic League affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
Tickets to all Drive home games can be purchased by calling the Drive Ticket Office at 864-240-4528 or online at www.GreenvilleDrive.com.
