Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - The Greenville Drive (23-16) ended their three-game series against the Lexington Legends (17-22) with some heroics, as Michael Chavis delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Drive a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night. With the win, the Drive clinched a victory of the series and notched their fourth walk-off win of the 2015 season.
Yoan Moncada began the bottom of the ninth against Emilio Ogando (2-2) with a single to left field, his third hit of the night. He moved to second on Javier Guerra's sacrifice bunt, and Chavis followed with a liner to center to score Moncada and collect his second walk-off hit of the season.
Carlos Pinales (2-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the victory for Greenville.
The Legends jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to Alfredo Escalera's solo homer off Jeffry Fernandez.
Greenville responded quickly in the bottom half, beginning with Mauricio Dubon's single that plated Derek Miller. Francisco Tellez followed suit, adding an RBI single of his own to score Dubon and make the score 2-1.
The scoring would come to a halt for a few innings until Lexington tied the game in the top of the fifth. Corey Toups doubled to start the inning and scored on a groundout by Carlos Garcia.
Fernandez gave the Drive a solid start despite a no-decision, allowing just two runs over five innings and tying his season-high with five strikeouts.
The Legends took a 3-2 lead in the eighth with Ryan O'Hearn's RBI double that scored center fielder Alfredo Escalera, who singled with one out.
Once again, the Drive answered back in their half of the inning. Derek Miller began the eighth with a single, and he later scored on Ben Moore's single up the middle which tied the game at three.
Moncada led the way at the plate for Greenville with the first multi-hit game of his young career. Moore's eighth-inning single extended his hitting streak to seven games.
Escalera was the hot hitter for the Legends, going 3-4 while scoring two runs. Wander Franco added a pair of hits.
The Drive's homestand continues on Thursday with a four-game series against the Charleston RiverDogs, affiliate of the New York Yankees. Thursday's game will mark the first game of the Battle of the Palmetto State presented by Spinx to be played in the Upstate, as the Drive swept the four-game series in Charleston last weekend. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM. RH Denny Bautista (1-0, 0.00) makes his first home start for the Drive, while the RiverDogs will start RH Luis Cedeno (3-2, 1.82).
