Drive Blanked by GreenJackets Again, 6-0
May 5, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release
Augusta, GA - Like the previous day's doubleheader, the Drive (15-12) once again had trouble figuring out the GreenJackets' (16-11) pitching staff. Having not scored since the third inning of game one on Tuesday, Greenville was shutout 6-0 at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
A trio of Augusta pitchers allowed just three hits, combining on the team's second straight shutout. âJackets starter Zach Wheeler (1-2) tossed 5.0 scoreless frames, allowing two hits and two walks while fanning nine.
Christian Vazquez tallied the Drive's first hit, beating out an infield single to the shortstop in the top of the second. Zach Gentile's leadoff single in the top of the fifth was their last hit off Wheeler.
In fact, the Drive were limited to one more hit for the rest of the game, another leadoff single by Gentile in the eighth, as relievers Ryan Verdugo and Jose Casilla combined for four scoreless innings.
Although he has yet to issue a walk in his first six appearances, a span of 28.0 innings, Kendal Volz (3-1) did suffer his first professional loss. The right-hander surrendered a pair of runs on six hits, while striking out for, over 5.0 innings.
Augusta delivered both runs off of the 2009 ninth round draft pick in the bottom of the third on Chris Dominguez's two-out, two-run single.
The GreenJackets pulled away as they scored four runs off the usually reliable reliever Jeremiah Bayer. Thomas Joseph, the first batter Bayer faced, greeted him rudely in the top of the sixth by belting a 1-1 offering for a solo homer. An inning later, Dominguez collected his third RBI with a run-scoring groundout.
In Augusta's final at bat, they added two more runs on RBI-singles off the bats of Dan Cook and Nick Liles.
The Drive and GreenJackets conclude their four-game series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Greenville will look to avoid the four-game sweep when they send southpaw Manuel Rivera (2-2, 2.63 ERA) to the hill, as Augusta counters with right-hander Kyle Vazquez (3-0, 1.93 ERA).
Although the Drive do not return home to Fluor Field until Wednesday, May 12, there will be exciting collegiate baseball at the ballpark on May 11th with Furman versus Clemson.
