Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - Drew Waters crushed a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday night, handing the Mississippi Braves (16-14) a 5-3 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (21-11) at Trustmark Park. The 20-year-old duo of Waters and Cristian Pache combined to go 5-for-9 with two home runs and four RBI.
20-year-old Huascar Ynoa (W, 1-2), the No. 14 overall prospect for the Braves, worked 3.0 scoreless innings of relief behind starter Joey Wentz to earn his first Double-A win.
Wentz pitched with runners on base in all six of his innings on Tuesday, ending though with his second-straight quality start. Pensacola pushed across single runs in the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.
Daniel Lockhart brought the M-Braves within a run in the bottom of the second inning with an RBI double down the right-field line scoring Alejandro Salazar. Salazar began the inning with a walk and stole his fourth base of the season to get into scoring position.
Pache put Mississippi on top for the first time in the bottom of the third inning. Waters led off with a single and then Pache sent his third home run onto the berm in left-center field giving the M-Braves a 3-2 edge. The homer was Pache's first since April 18 and first at Trustmark Park.
Pensacola tied the game against Wentz in the bottom of the fifth inning when Travis Blankenhorn brought Alex Kirillof home on a sacrifice fly. The run was set up by the second consecutive double from Miguel Sano, the Twins rehabbing third baseman. Sano finished the night 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI.
Wentz finished the night with a no-decision on a season-high 106 pitches. The 21-year-old from Leawood, Kansas gave up three runs, two earned on five hits, walking three and striking out two. Ynoa kept Pensacola off the scoreboard and struck out four over the next three innings.
Carlos Martinez led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk and Connor Lien pinch-ran for the Braves catcher. Wahoos reliever Alex Powers got Ray-Patrick Didder to fly out bringing up Waters with one out. The No. 8 overall prospect for the Braves hit a towering 416-foot home run down the right field line, off the Farm Bureau Grill, on a 1-0 pitch, ending the game on the second walk-off of the homestand.
The M-Braves have won four games on their final at-bat at Trustmark Park this season, but Tuesday's walk-off was the first in the ninth inning.
The victory moves Mississippi to 6-1 on the current ten-game homestand and pulls them back within 4.0 games of the first-place Blue Wahoos in the South Division standings.
The M-Braves continue the homestand on Wednesday morning with game three of the five-game series against Pensacola. LHP Tucker Davidson (0-0, 1.46) makes the start for the Braves against RHP Brusdar Graterol (3-0, 2.23). First pitch is set for 10:35 am with coverage beginning at 10:20 am on 103.9 WYAB, TuneIn Radio, MiLB First Pitch app. and MiLB.TV (subscription required).
