Dream Selects Angel McCoughtry with First Pick
April 9, 2009 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA)
Atlanta Dream News Release
Atlanta, April 9, 2009- The Atlanta Dream selected Louisville star Angel McCoughtry today with the first pick of the 2009 WNBA Draft. The announcement concludes a whirlwind week for McCoughtry, who led Louisville to its first-ever Final Four appearance before suffering a loss to Connecticut in Tuesday's championship game.
McCoughtry, a 6-1 guard/forward, earned First Team All-American honors this season and was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year. For the third straight year, McCoughtry led the conference in scoring (23.1 ppg), rebounding (9.3) and steals (4.2)-the first player in Big East history to do so. Her 4.2 steals per game led the nation this season.
"The thing I really like the most about Angel is that she plays both ends of the court and is already defensive-minded," said Dream General Manager and Head Coach Marynell Meadors. "It speaks volumes that she led a conference as tough as the Big East in scoring, rebounding and steals for the last three years. She rebounds, she scores and I think her upside is huge. She's going to be a great addition to our team."
The Baltimore native finishes her collegiate career as the most decorated player in the program's history. She ended her collegiate career as Louisville's all-time leader for points scored (2,779), scoring average (20.0 ppg) rebounding (1,261), steals (481), blocked shots (162), free throws made (552), free throws attempted (774) and games played (139). Her numerous accolades include Big East Player of the Year as a sophomore and second-team All-American honors as a sophomore and junior. McCoughtry also helped the United States win a gold medal at the 2007 Pan Am Games in Brazil, where she led the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and ranked second in rebounding (5.6 rpg).
Dream General Manager & Head Coach Marynell Meadors will introduce McCoughtry during a press conference scheduled for Monday, April 13 at the downtown Atlanta Marriott (160 Spring Street NW Atlanta, Georgia 30303) at 11 a.m. The press conference is open to the general public.
The Dream will also host an exclusive "Meet the Number Ones" event at the Marriott on Monday evening, during which season ticket holders will have the opportunity to mingle with McCoughtry and former number one pick Chamique Holdsclaw (1999 Draft). Media interested in attending the event should contact the Dream media relations department.
The Dream will tip off its second season on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 7 p.m. against the Indiana Fever.
