Shock Acquires 18th Overall Pick In 2009 Draft

Auburn Hills, MI - Detroit Shock Head Coach and General Manager Bill Laimbeer announced today that the Shock acquired the 18th overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft from the Atlanta Dream in exchange for 5-foot-10 guard Ashley Shields.

Last season, Shields appeared in seven games for the Shock. She posted averages of 3.1 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.3 assists in 6.3 minutes. On August 31 at Chicago, Shields scored a season- high four points, then tied her season-high in points (4) and played a season-high eight minutes vs. Indiana on September 5. Shields won her first WNBA Championship with the Detroit Shock in 2008.

Shields was originally selected by Houston with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2007 WNBA Draft. She played in 26 games for the Comets that season and posted averages of 5.3 points, 1.3 rebounds in 11.7 minutes per game. The Southwest Tennessee Community College product was the first Junior College/Community College player to be selected in a WNBA Draft.

The Shock now hold the 11th pick in the first round, the 18th pick in the second round, and the 37th pick in the third round of the 2009 WNBA Draft.
