Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Jose Ortiz belted a home run and three Dayton pitchers combined on a two-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods 1-0 on Friday night. A crowd of 9,391 attended the game at Fifth Third Field.

The win kept the Dragons in a tie with Great Lakes for the East Division Second Half wildcard spot. Both teams are only one-half game behind current #1 seed Lake County with 17 games to play.

Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso (11-5) worked the first six innings and allowed only one hit, a bloop single to center by James Harris leading off the sixth. Travieso walked five and struck out four to earn the win. He pitched out a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the sixth when he struck out Ty Young to end the inning. Travieso moved into a tie for the league lead in victories with his 11th of the season. The win was the 18th of Travieso's Dragons career, tying the franchise record set by Rafael Gonzalez from 2005-'07.

Joel Bender tossed two strong innings in relief of Travieso, striking out five and giving up one hit and one walk. In the seventh, he struck out Elias Torres to end the inning with runners at first and third.

Alejandro Chacin earned his 18th save with a scoreless ninth inning. He walked the lead-off batter but struck out the next three hitters in order to end the game.

Ortiz drilled a home run to left field with two outs in the second inning for the only run of the game. It was his second homer of the year.

The Dragons finished with seven hits. Alex Blandino was 1 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to 10 straight games.

The Dragons (26-27) host the Hot Rods (24-29) in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field. Jackson Stephens (2-4, 4.24) will start for the Dragons against Bowling Green's Bruedlin Suero (4-3, 4.01). The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner Cable channels 23 and 372). Reds Assistant Director of Media Relations Jamie Ramsey will be the guest commentator.
