After an RBI double by catcher Chris Schaeffer in the third inning, second baseman David Harris drove a two-out, bases-clearing double to put the Lugnuts ahead 4-0.
An RBI single by center fielder D.J. Davis capped the five-run frame against South Bend starting pitcher Blake Perry (Loss, 7-5).
Lansing starter Miguel Castro (Win, 1-1) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on two hits with four walks and eight strikeouts for his first Lugnuts win.
The Silver Hawks scored a run in the next three innings to close the deficit to two, but reliever Joe Lovecchio (Hold, 1) pitched a pair of scoreless innings with two strikeouts in his Lugnuts debut to halt the rally.
