Dayton Dragons News Release
Lansing, Mich.-Byron Wiley and Mike Konstanty each hit two-run home runs as the Dayton Dragons set a club record with eight stolen bases as they defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 5-2 on Saturday night. The win improved the Dragons second half record to 2-1.
The eight stolen bases eclipsed the club record of six set originally in 2004 and then matched earlier this season. Kevin Coddington and Dave Sappelt each stole two bases in the game. The Dragons stole five bases in the first two innings.
The Dragons got on the board in the second inning when Cody Puckett was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on Kevin Coddington's double to make it 1-0.
Lansing tied the game in the bottom of the second on a home run to center field by Chris Emanuele, his third homer of the year.
Dayton regained the lead in the fourth. Puckett singled with one out and Byron Wiley followed with a long home run to right field to make it 3-1. It was Wiley's fifth homer of the year and his third in his last seven games.
Mike Konstanty belted a two-run home run for Dayton in the fifth inning, his third homer of the season, to extend the Dragons lead to 5-1.
Lansing scored its final run in the sixth inning to pull to within three at 5-2. But Dragons relievers Oscar Castro, Junior Martinez, and Aguido Gonzalez each worked a scoreless inning to close out the game.
Dragons starter Matt Fairel (5-3) earned the win, tossing six strong innings. He allowed four hits and two runs with two walks and six strikeouts. Gonzalez notched his seventh save with a perfect bottom of the ninth, picking up two strikeouts.
The Dragons collected nine hits. Wiley, Konstanty, and Coddington each had two hits. Puckett reached base five times with a single, three walks, and a hit batsman in his first game back with Dayton after a five-game stint in Sarasota. Andrew Means went 0 for 5 as his nine game hitting streak came to an end.
Dayton (2-1, 30-43) is 7-4 against Lansing (1-2, 27-45) this season and 5-2 against the Lugnuts at Oldsmobile Park.
The Dragons will close out the four-game series at Lansing on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. Curtis Partch (4-6, 5.69) will start for Dayton against Lansing's Henderson Alvarez (5-5, 3.97). The Dragons next home game is Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. vs. Fort Wayne at Fifth Third Field.
