South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - With a 7-2 win on Saturday night, the Fort Wayne TinCaps have now defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks in three straight games, and 14 times in 15 tries during the 2009 campaign. The Silver Hawks are 0-3 in the second half, and have fallen a season's worst 17 games under .500 with the loss.
The TinCaps scored twice in the bottom of the first inning against Ryan Cook (LP, 5-6) when Justin Baum blasted a home run into the left field seats with two outs and a runner on. It was Baum's first home run with the TinCaps this season, and his third overall after hitting two at high-A Lake Elsinore.
Cook had base runners in the next three innings, but was helped out as his defense turned two double plays. Unfortunately, Fort Wayne starter Erik Davis (WP, 6-3) had the same benefit, as his defense turned two double plays during his time on the mound.
Cook couldn't escape the fifth inning however, as Fort Wayne broke the game open by scoring four times. Daniel Robertson had a RBI single to push the lead to 3-0, and Cole Figueroa cleared the loaded bases with a double for the 6-0 lead after five innings.
South Bend would get one back in the top of the sixth with Justin Parker driving in Reynaldo Navarro with a double. That would be the only run the Hawks would get against Davis in his 5.2 innings of work.
Fort Wayne added a run against reliever Justin Mace (ND) in the seventh when Robertson homered for the fifth time this season. It marked the 16th home run for the TinCaps in 15 games against South Bend this season.
South Bend again was able to answer with a scoring inning, but only one run again against reliever Rob Musgrave (ND). Parker picked up his third hit, went to second on a wild pitch, went to third on a single by Marc Krauss, and scored on another wild pitch to make it 7-2.
Parker had three hits in his first game off the DL as an offensive bright spot, and Krauss extended his hitting streak to eight games (every game he has played with South Bend).
The series concludes with a Sunday matinee at Parkview Field in Fort Wayne. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 PM Eastern Time. LHP Taylor Sinclair (2-2, 3.34 ERA) will be in the starting role for South Bend, with Midwest League ERA leader RHP Anthony Bass (6-3, 2.14 ERA) going for Fort Wayne. Pregame coverage begins at 2:45 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
