Dayton Dragons News Release
Midland, Mich.-Erik Kanaby scored from second base on a throwing error by Dayton's Kevyn Feiner to break a 1-1 tie with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Great Lakes Loons defeated the Dragons 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday. The loss dropped the Dragons to 6-8 in the second half.
The game-winning rally started when Kanaby drew a walk from Dragons reliever Zach Stewart with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Stewart then hit Brandon Taylor with his first pitch to move Kanaby to second. Jaime Ortiz followed with a ground ball to Feiner at second. He fielded the possible inning-ending bouncer but threw wide of shortstop Zach Cozart at second. As the ball carried into shallow left field, Kanaby easily raced around to score to end the game.
Great Lakes took a 1-0 lead in the third inning before the Dragons tied the game in the sixth. Dayton's Justin Reed led off the inning with a walk and was forced at second by Keltavious Jones on a ground ball to short. One batter later, Logan Parker drilled a double to left to bring in Jones from first to tie the game.
The Dragons had only one hit the rest of the way and finished the game with only three hits.
Dragons starting pitcher Matt Klinker was outstanding but did not receive a decision. He worked seven innings, allowing four hits and one run with one walk and three strikeouts.
The second game of the doubleheader will follow.
The Dragons meet the Loons on Friday at 3:05 p.m. Daniel Guerrero (0-1, 11.37) will start for Dayton.
Notes: Dragons shortstop Zack Cozart and third baseman Brandon Waring both returned to the lineup after missing multiple games with injuries.
